An observation I have made is:

If using VSS then the tools out of date message is "informational" with a green icon
If using VM quiesce then the tools out of date message is "warning" with the yellow icon

Correct.
VMtools are used by Veeam only during quiesce, so in this case having old tools can be a problem. When VSS is used, there is no real issue in having old vmtools, so we send out an info level message.

I believe this hasn't changed since v7.

Do other guys see the same?

Thanks for the info.

There was definitely a change in behaviour with the upgrade to v8.

All of my jobs with v7 finished as [Success] and there was no information in the details column for the VM.

After the upgrade to v8 without any changes to anything the next time the job ran it finished as [Warning] and the "... VMware tools are out of date" was listed in the details column for some of the VMs.

To be honest this wouldn't be an issue if I didn't have to reboot the Servers to upgrade the tools.

I've got the same warnings now, after upgrading to v8. It's on a custom (locked) linux server where installing vmware-tools is not really an option.

Our QC team is looking into latest support cases on this behavior, so thanks everyone who has reported this to our technical team.

[MERGED] : Warning Message Version 8

Post by jbrullemans »

Hi,

I just installed Veeam V8 but no i get an errormessage that on one server the VMware tools are out of date. I know i have to upgrade it but it an production machine and i can't schedule a reboot in a short time. Is there any way to suppress the warning message for this warning? I didn't have this problem with Veeam V7.

I noticed the same thing, i had VMware Tools Quiscence enabled in the job for some Linux VM's. I now have disabled this and the Warning about the VMware Tools status disappeared.

The reason i had this enabled was because of a pre-freeze script, but now in V8 you can let Veeam run the pre-freeze script.

Guys, just a small update - we have reproduced this behavior and scheduled to change warning message into informational one in the next minor update. Currently, this only affects backup jobs that have VMware Tools Quiescence enabled.

I don't have any confirmed dates, but it should happen this year.

I concur with above; this is a new behavior for me in v8. I'm very happy to see that this will be changed in the next minor update! Thank you very much. Vitaliy.

Just to make sure we are on the same page about the expected change - if VMware Tools are not running or not installed, you will see a warning message. If VMware Tools are just out-of-date, then there will be an info message in the job log.

Would it make more sense to have these kind of alerts default to warning (or whatever) but you can override this with a registry setting?

According to the topic the default behavior should be an info message ;) Anyway, if you would like to monitor VMware Tools state, you can use Veeam ONE (part of Availability Suite) and get notified about these issues with VMware Tools.
