unable to enable VSS on repo volume

Post by jellekamma »

Hi,

We have 2 sites, each site has a physical windows 2016 server with 4x100TB refs volumes.
These volumes are defined as scale out repos in Veeam backup and replication.
Each volume has a folder on it which holds the actual backups, lets say g:\repo1
I want to be able to create vss snapshots because the volume on G also holds a folder with NAS data. I can enable shadow copies on G but the copies will be stored on C:. I have no options to put it on another disk. Is this not supported?

Hi Jelle,

I am quite sure Microsoft VSS does not support volumes above 64TB.
As for the VSS snapshot redirection, it is technically possible(vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=D: /on=E: /maxsize=200GB), however is not recommended.

Just to be on the same string: Veeam NAS Backup does not necessarily need VSS snapshot to read data from. You can add said paths as SMB \\server\drive$\folder\ and we will back them up just fine.

/Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! I know veeam can back it up just fine, however, this will cost me a fair amount of extra licenses.
