Use Veeam Explorer for Exchange to restore from another backup product

Post by Daveyd »

Is it possible to restore a mailbox from an Exahange EDB file that was backed up by another backup solution? I have restored the EDB file from the other backup software to my Veeam server. I launch Explorer for Exchange and point to the EDB. Explorer says "Veeam Explorer is not configured. Click OK and browse to ESE.DLL file on your Exchange server"....However in the Extensible Storage Engine screes, it says I have Microsoft Exchange 2010 and 2016 and later configured. The Exchange server the EDB came from is 2016. I then get the message thet Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange is not configured.

Is this just not possible?

Usually the ese.dll is loaded from the image level backup of the exchange server. In you case you need to add the ese.dll from your exchange server (or same version).
The process is described here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... l?ver=95u4

I saw that article before I posted this message. I grabbed the ese.dll file from the source Exchange server (2016) and copied it to the Veeam server and pointed Exchange Explorer to it and it Explorer shows it as "Configured" with a green check mark, but still says it is not configured

Interestingly enough, the article shows multiple tabs Extensible Storage Engine, SMTP Settings and General. It also shoes "Show PST size estimation in status bar"...I do not see those tabs or options in my Explorer for Exchange.

I will open a case. Thanks.

Hi Dave, please open a case, provide extended logs, Exchange version (including CU), and ese.dll file.

Hi Dave.
Did you solve your Problem?
Did you opened a case?

I facing same Problem. I've tried default ese and even ese.dll included in cu20.

Thx Thomas

Hard to say without logs and without seeing the environment. Maybe this one helps? https://www.veeam.com/kb1906
