Veeam 6.1 & Server 2012

Post by jamessa »

I was not able to find an answer to this in the forums.
Will Veeam 6.1 correctly backup and restore Windows Server 2012 and specifically handle doing a restore of a 2012 Domain Controller?

Hi Jamie,

Full support of Windows Server 2012 is coming in Veeam Backup & Replication v6.5 (coming soon), though I believe if you're on vSphere 5.1 you can safely backup Windows Server 2012 even with v6.1.

Thanks!

You need vSphere 5.1 to run Windows Server 2012, but vSphere 5.1 is not supported by the current version of Veeam.

False, vsphere 5.0U1 with patch ESXi500-201209001 support Windows Server 2012 ;)

Hmm, I have checked the corresponding patch notes, and did not find any mention of added support for Windows Server 2012. Where does your information come from?

Guess this answers it all. http://blogs.vmware.com/guestosguide/20 ... -2012.html
Need ESXi 5.1 which then I will need Veeam 6.5.

It's also listed in the compatibility guide.

Select 5.0 U1 from the drop-down list and it will list the required patch level for 2012 support. This patch updates 5.0 U1 with the changes required to support the RTM version of Microsoft's VM generation counter spec. Versions of 5.0 U1 without this patch use an implementation that worked with the RC version of the spec, but is not compatible with the final RTM release so this patch is required for full compatibility.

Ahh, good find there. I guess now the question is back to Veeam as to whether we can backup Server 2012 with Veeam 6.1 since we are already patched to the supported ESXi 5.01 Update 1 Patch set 4.

What do you say Veeam?

Since 6.1 was released prior to Windows 2012 then it's pretty much impossible for it to officially support Windows 2012. Full support for Windows 2012 will come with the release of B&R 6.5 which should be quite soon. With 6.1, there should be no major issues backing up Windows 2012 VMs (I backup several in my lab), but it is not officially supported, and thus restore of a Windows 2012 DC would also be "unsupported".
