Veeam 9.5 and vSphere 6.5

Post by johnkdevlin »

https://www.veeam.com/system-requirements.html

Seeking some guidance please.
Reviewing the system document above for Veeam 9.5 it mentions that ESX 4.1x to be a supported hypervisor.

Q: Anyone have any experience of ESX 4.1 hosts in a cluster with the latest updates and Veeam 9.5 running as a vm in the 4.1 cluster -then replicating vm's on 4.1 hosts
to a new 6.5 cluster, updating tools and hardware levels etc. The existing VM's are hardware level 7 and looking at the documentation from veeam the following statement
is mentioned: " Restore and replication of VMs between different ESX(i) versions requires that VM’s virtual hardware version is compatible with the target host."

on a separate note

Q: Anyone have any experience of ESX 4.0 hosts in a cluster with latest updates and Veeam 8.0 running as a vm in the 4.0 cluster -then replicating vm's on 4.0 hosts
to a new 6.5 cluster, updating tools and hardware levels etc. The existing VM's are hardware level 7 and looking at the documentation from veeam the following statement
is mentioned: " Restore and replication of VMs between different ESX(i) versions requires that VM’s virtual hardware version is compatible with the target host."
Veeam 8 is not supported on 6.5 from what i can see though.

Testing the options above has worked for me, seeking any others experiences of such old version moves as current hardware wont support anything above vsphere 4.1x

Thanks J

Basically, it's possible as long as both source and target hosts support the same hardware version. In your case this version is 7.

Otherwise, if you update replica VM hardware version to, say, 8 or higher, some replication operations won't be possible, such as failback.

Anyway, I do recommend updating your hosts to 5.0 or 5.5 at least, as version 4.0 is no longer supported by the latest product build, and support for 4.1 will be deprecated soon.

Thanks.

Thanks for all your advise on this, the migration went very well, decided in the end to turn off the vm's and replicate them, then when over to the 6.5 cluster updated tools, hw levels and running very well, again appreciate the information
