Veeam and FT

Post by tosh »

i tried searching the forums and maybe not good at it and couldn't find a clear answer.

i'm running the latest version for veeam (U3a) and vsphere (6.7).
It seems that veeam supports fault tolerance from the KB https://www.veeam.com/kb1178 i am reading. but when i call vmware and veeam support now tell me that it is not supported, was there a regression ?

i actually tested veeam on top of fault tolerance using nimble storage snapshots over FC (but as we know it still generates VM snapshots)
and it works fine but i wouldn't want to use it in prod if it is not supported.

Veeam Support - Case # 03241404 - Fault Tolerance enquriy

see two posts below, removed name of agent to preserve anonymity.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for contacting Veeam support regarding VMware 6.7 Fault Tolerance.

Just to give you an update and confirmation, I checked with our tier 2 engineers as well and what we found is that, fault tolerant virtual machines are not supported with Snapshot.

As Veeam backup based on Snapshots, this means that this is also not supported.

This is what we found on the VMware 6.7 article for Fault Tolerance.

The following vSphere features are not supported for fault tolerant virtual machines.

Snapshots. Snapshots must be removed or committed before Fault Tolerance can be enabled on a virtual machine. In addition, it is not possible to take snapshots of virtual machines on which Fault Tolerance is enabled.

https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphe ... 97033.html

Sorry for the confusion caused on the phone but as Veeam depends on making snapshot, this is not supported.

Should you have any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact us and please advise if the case can be close. Thank you.

----------------------

Hi Thomas,

It appears it was supported for previous version but as VMware 6.7 does not support snapshot for fault tolerance, Veeam also not support it.

Please note that Veeam only send the API command to VMware to create and remove snapshot and if there's issue with VMware making the snapshot for virtual machine with fault tolerance, it is not supported.

Kind Regards

I checked and FT VM backup work fine last time they tested this summer. They will re-test as a part of vSphere 6.7 U1 regression testing cycle.

i have come to the same conclusion since i had no problem during the tests but i think the important question still is "is it supported by both vmware and veeam ?"

Let me double-check with support now, may be they know something we don't know - or can confirm it was just a mistake of the particular engineer.

One of our senior engineers will be reviewing the ticket shortly. I am going to update the thread with our findings.

Looks like the engineer made some incorrect statements. Veeam Backup and Replication works via API and hence the snapshotting of FT VMs is supported. The QA team also confirmed that that was one of the test scenarios. We apologize for the misunderstanding and will make sure that all engineers are aware of the feature.
