Veeam B&R v9 doesn't support Exchange 2016, is that true?
Support Ticket 01955306
Hello VeeamTeam
I just opened a Support Ticket with following request:
We have an Exchange coexistence (Exchange 2010 & 2016). A single Item restore with a mailbox being on a Exchange 2010 server works without problem. The same with a mailbox in a Exchange 2016 server doesn't work. The Veeam service account has full permission on that mailbox (on Exchange 2016). Also strange certificate error popup during the connection trial (see attached pdf). Could you help me to verify if the permission is set correctly on the exchange 2016 servers?
Then I got a call from support and he was telling me Exchange 2016 is not yet supported. That cannot be true, right?
The release notes from v.9 states that "Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange" supports Exchange 2016.
Can I be more confused? ...
Could you please clarify it for me?
Thanks a lot
Joerg

Hello Joerg, Exchange Server 2016 is indeed supported in Veeam B&R v9. So please ask your engineer to investigate the issue closer.

Hi Foggy
Thanks for the answer, I knew it!!
Do you know if Veeam has a document about "how to implement single item restore in Exchange 2016"?
Thanks a lot

I believe the procedure doesn't differ from any other version.

I meant the setup, the prerequisites, the "how to give the Exchange permission to the Veeam service account" etc.

Re: Veeam B&R v9 doesn't support Exchange 2016, is that true
Basically Veeam needs an Account that is a member of the local admin group somehow.
We look at the Server and detect that there is Exchange on it. We document all needed Exchange settings to be able to automatically mount the databases at restore.
After that we install a VSS requestor (that's why a backup operator is not enough) and use Exchange VSS writers and other writers to bring everything in a consistent state. We leave restore awareness settings and create a snapshot for backup.
At Exchange Explorer we you need an account that is able to write to the mailbox (by EWS) when you want to directly restore mails. The user at backup does not need this right. You can give the Veeam Explorer an separate account at restore. If you use other restore options like "send by mail" no special rights or access to mailboxes are needed.
