Veeam Backup Proxy Server Sizing
Hi Guys,
I need you helps regarding veeam backup server sizing best practice:
CPU Sizing:
Rules 1
1 vCPU/core per 250 VM
Rules 2
Each task requires a single CPU core
RAM Sizing:
4 GB RAM plus 200 MB for each concurrent task
If I have physical Server with 2 CPU, 6 core/CPU and RAM= 24 Go
•CPU Sizing: 12 core =12 task
•Ram Sizing: 20 Go = 100 tasks
So in final my proxy server can do only 12 task concurrent task?
Could you please confirm me
Thanks

Re: Veeam Backup Proxy Server Sizing
Hi,
So, if no other roles are installed on your Proxy Server then your calculations seem to be correct except this part:
Also you should keep im mind that Windows OS also consumes some amount of RAM so the total amount of concurrent tasks your RAM is suffuient for will be lesser.
Thank you.
that's for Backup server, for proxy server it's 2 GB RAM plus 200 MB for each concurrent task.bk@virtualtn.com wrote:4 GB RAM plus 200 MB for each concurrent task

thanks Ptide
and what about CPU limitation? Each task requires a single CPU core ?

Re: Veeam Backup Proxy Server Sizing
Out of curiosity, how many VMs are you going to backup? What processing mode are you going to use?

Re: Veeam Backup Proxy Server Sizing
We have 2760 VM more than VM have n HDD, so in total we have arround 7495 HDD (130 VM with monster VMDK +5TB)
the backup policy is to do full backup each month per VM with 2 restore points to keep on the disk
We choise direct SAN mode with 2 proxy physique each server have (2 CPU/6 core per CPU and 24 Go for RAM)
Thanks for your help

Re: Veeam Backup Proxy Server Sizing
Got it! In this case backup window does not really matter, since you will be doing active fulls each month only, correct?

Correct.
Every month according to a backup planning will do Fulls VM Backup.

Re: Veeam Backup Proxy Server Sizing
One thing you will want to remember is that each disk in a VM that Veeam has to read is considered a "task" for the proxy server. Also, every Veeam "function" that is installed on that server will require the minimum resources for those tasks as well (direct SAN proxy that also is the repository server would require more RAM/CPU than one that is just one or the other).

Re: Veeam Backup Proxy Server Sizing
Good point, Steve! However, the tasks number should not matter much here, since there is no defined backup window and processing speed will depend on the bottleneck reported by a backup job.
