Veeam Backup Strategy

Post by bgalante »

I'm new to Veeam. I'm getting tasked with setting it up.

This is the recommendation (which I dont agree with).

We have a remote site with vsphere running, we're going to replicate our VM's there.

The issue is, they want to make our veeam backups from the replica's at the remote site.

IS THIS A GENERALLY ACCEPTED PRACTICE? or do I tell mgmt they are out their minds...?

My thoughts are:

1> I want the backups as close as possible. The speed of the local net is way faster than to/from remote site.
2> The backup jobs would run much faster.

Does anyone create their backups from their replicas? just wondering.. Sounds wrong, lol.

Thanks!
Brian

Hi Brian,

My new solution is to have local copies for fast restores but also replicate to offsite dtacentre and then these replica backup to tape as a third backup too.

Have a quick read of this -:

There are many ways to implement the solution but multiple copies are the way forward as above, and recovery time your business is willing to cope with should be the main driver . e.g. if you link goes down and you are relying on the remote site for data recovery you could be left exposed.

Thanks

I'd agree with you on that. The backup jobs would run much faster also because running backup jobs against replicated VMs would mean absence of CBT.

If having everything on remote site is a requirement, I'd probably stick to replication from backups functionality.

Thanks.

This was my greatest concern, the strategy I stated was 3-0-2. I have advised to rethink this strategy.

v.Eremin,

Are you saying I can't do virtual appliance mode when making a backup from a replica?

Nope, I meant that backup jobs running against replicated VMs would not use CBT. More information can be found here. Thanks.

I would configure the backup to locally backup and locally replicate in case you need to restore.
the 3rd backup would be offsite like replica
