Veeam backup taking long time after HDD block change ?

Post by albertwt »

People,

Can anyone here please clarify if the HDD block size change can significantly impacting the speed of large Reverse Incremental mode backup ?

Image

The L: drive where it stores the VBK and .VIB is formatted using NTFS 64 KB Allocation Size.

I've got one Exchange Server backup that is taking 18+ hours for the incremental backup (not even full), and from the screenshot below it shows the Bottleneck is Target which I assume is the Backup Repository drives.

Any help and clarification would be greatly appreciated.

If you're referring to the RAID stripe size, then the larger one is typically better for Veeam B&R-related activity, since it uses pretty large blocks (256KB - 4MB). You, however, have it already set to 512KB. Haven't you thought about switching to RAID10?

Hi Alex,

At the moment capacity is what I need, the backup repo is now 75% full. So raid-10 is not possible at the moment.

Is there any other tweaks to improve the backup speed ?

Nothing exceptionally new. If reversed incremental is slow, either getting faster disks or switching to forward incremental are general recommendations.

Foggy,

I might try that forever Forward Incremental mode by changing the radio button option. But does it going to cause full backup after the changing or it is fine to do it without triggering Active Full backup ?
The disk space is limited here around 1.8 TB free, the full backup file is 8.06 TB.

Switching to forward incremental does not require additional full. The chain will be based on existing one, which is the latest restore point in reversed incremental chain.

Many thanks Alex,

Looks like I'm already using the best practice in the large stripe size.
I will change the Backup mode over the weekend and see how it goes.
