Veeam backups to a win2012 storage server DD question
Hi,
we are trying a HP storeasy for holding our veeam backups we have enabled deduplication and the server is configuered with Veeam best practices for win2012 deduplication.
Background optimization is enabled and one throughtput optimization job that runs monday to saturday start time 07:00
We can se two jobs using poweshell one is queued and the other is running but progress is as often as i have viewd it´s at 0%
I belive that the one running is the background optimization job. and the one queued is the throughtput job why dosent it run ????
PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-DedupJob
Type ScheduleType StartTime Progress State Volume
---- ------------ --------- -------- ----- ------
Optimization Scheduled 0 % Queued V:
Optimization Scheduled 10:09 AM 0 % Running V:
Dedup files older 1 one day is configuered. Currently there is 4,65TB used data of 10TB. Deduplication savings is 11% 626 GB
if anyone has any clues about our queued jobs please respond.
Regards

Hi, Christer. Since this forum isn’t primarily concerned either HP StorEasy and/or with Windows 2012 deduplication, it might be worth asking your questions at specific vendors’ community, instead. Thanks.

Re: Veeam backups to a win2012 storage server DD question
Well we are Veeam customers and used the best practices by Veeam to configure the ** storage device. Veeam also promotes win2012dedup feature in the video how good it is and what to tweak and what not.
I guess other veeam customers use win2012 dedup feature together with Veeam, so i thought i give it a shot here. Frankly your answer makes me a bit upset and i think your using it as a cheapshot to pass on my forumpost but still feel like you solved a forum question. Lame.....

We don’t mind users posting about side issues.
Also, my agenda wasn’t to upset you, nor was it to give a lame excuse. Instead, I was trying to point out a right direction towards the other communities where your questions are likely to be answered much faster, since the problem with queued Windows 2012 deduplication job seems to be a bit outside the actual scope of this forum.
Though, of course, you can wait and see whether one of our customers has previously come across similar problem.
Thank you for your understanding.

Re: Veeam backups to a win2012 storage server DD question
I think Vlad might have got confisued by the Storeasy part - its just an x86 box running windows storage server.
can you manually start the dedupe jobs ? I assume there are files that would be old enough to be optimized? remember if you run a reverse incremental job it would not get caught by your policy.
I havn't had that kind of problem, but I think I would possible follow a few of the steps here to start troubleshooting.

Hi,
All jobs runs incremental not reversed. Yesterday we had savedspace of 620GB today there is only 190GB. but i the job is schedueld to run all day maybe it hasent finsished yet.
Optimized files is only 3 ? there is a lot more then 3 files on the dedup disk is it that slow.

Re: Veeam backups to a win2012 storage server DD question
It sounds like the tasks have been running at some point , which is a start.
How big are your full backup files ? also how much RAM is in the Storeasy ? I think they have a good ammount but I@d imagine you'd want 16GB at least for dedupe performance.
you will only start to see signficiant savings once you have multiple vbk files for a job , how long are you retaining data for ( I assume you have weekly active or synthetic full backups )

Don't forget that Windows 2012 dedup ingestion rate is 100GB/h so to ingest 4.65TB...

Re: Veeam backups to a win2012 storage server DD question
Hi,
I have created a new volume for dd with only one server in the job. now dedup runs quick and dispalys the info in powershell. I think the jobs we have now are to large and we have pushed to much data into the windows box for it to dedup with good result.
What is a good AGE on data before start deduplication ? we are planning to store backups 6 weeks and some jobs 6 months.
also we have a backupjobs with lagre amount of data, should i break them up in to smaller ones one job is 1.6TB another is around 1,5 tb what is a good ratio to hold for each job.
Thanx for all the help

Re: Veeam backups to a win2012 storage server DD question
Hi, the decision about the age of the backups to be deduplicated has only to deal with your environments. What is the oldest backups you usually restore from? Usually, as per statistics, backups are more than 90% restored from the last two days. So backups older than 3 days is a good and safe choice, but really check first your specific use case.
