Veeam CDP & Dell VxRail

Post by YvesS »

Hey Everyone,

I was wondering if it is Possible to implement Veeam CDP with a Dell VxRail as a Source System.
I can't find any mentions that it isn't, but VxRail is not listed ond the Supported HCI List: https://www.veeam.com/kb4056. VxRail is based on VSAN
I did a test run and received the Error: "CDP is not supported for source storage policies with multiple sub-policies"

Would be great if i'd get some clarification :)

Kind regards,
Yves

VxRail do not have an own Storage backend as you said and therefore will likely not be listed there. Support is covered by the vSAN support for CDP.

Now the question is why there are multiple sub-policies present which we do not support in general.
Can you please open a support ticket and upload logs?
As well please check you VMware system on why there are sub-policies in place. Is it really comming from VxRail or is it related to a manual configuration that you did?

Can you please check as well what kind of VM Storage Policies are in place and their settings?

I spoke with our R&D team and we think that this is a bug and the check of this situation should not be in place. To be sure, we want to check this with you in your envionment. Please create a support ticket and let me know the support ticket number here in the forum.

I will escalate then the support case and share a workaround with them on how it can work. They will verify your environment then first before the workaround will be applied. It is very likely that the workaround can be applied to your envionment.

As well we want to fix this in one of the next upcoming versions/updates.

Turns out that it is not a bug and works as designed.
When you enable multiple storage policy rules, there is a limitation on how filters work.
Please check if you need really more than one rule at
VM Storage Policy - Policy structure
So it is not Dell VxRail specific.

We will look into this in one of the next updates/versions if we can workaround the limitation.

Thanks for your feedback.
The Problem is that like in most HCI Environments, everything is automated and scripted.
I have no Idea if it breaks something when we change something on the rules.

Hi ,

The 5 node all flash is setup and i`m doing some testing now... I have found something else interesting .. Previous posts are saying that VXRail needs a proxy per host ? At the moment during some initial backups of VXrail i have one proxy on a different host to the VMs being backed up and still getting great hot add speeds.. i will look at CDP over the weekend and report back .. current company we only have a trail license till Tuesday .. but will try the CDP and let you know! Maybe Anton , Vit or Polina can extend my trail .lic ;)

Can you please describe "it just hangs" a bit more? Maybe open Veeam support ticket and upload logs and share the ticket number here?
