Veeam CDP - What RPOs can be achieved?

Post by jegan »

Good afternoon,

Current Veeam employee here on the sales side, working with a customer who is looking for another existing Veeam client to confirm what RPO's can be achieved utilizing CDP within Veeam and what bandwidth is established between sites?

Their goal is to achieve RPOs in the seconds and they are just looking for some guidance on bandwidth connections and if possible sharing a little more about hardware details and architecture etc. They are currently using VMware, Availability Suite Universal Licenses (Ent. Plus) so they have the features to do so, just want to make sure RPOs in the seconds are achievable and what they can expect.

Thank you.

Hi, Jacob. The CDP wizard includes a built-in calculator which estimates the required bandwidth and CDP proxy resources given the specified RPO settings and historical I/O load of the VMs selected for protection. Thanks!

Hi Jegan,
Network between infrastructure components required for CDP must be minimum 1 Gbps. We recommend to use 10 Gbps or faster and MTU 9000.
The minimum RPO is 2 seconds, however it can be not optimal if your CDP policy contains many VMs with high workload. The optimal RPO is not less than 15 seconds. The maximum RPO is 60 minutes.

Do you have a link to a document that has this as a best practice???

Hi manlyboots

Version 11
Moustafa's answer is from the veeam cook book (v11) and user guide for version 11:
https://veeamcookbook.com/vbr/Replicati ... ndows.html
Network between infrastructure components required for CDP must be minimum 1 Gbps. We recommend to use 10 Gbps or faster and MTU 9000.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
The minimum RPO is 2 seconds, however it can be not optimal if your CDP policy contains many VMs with high workload. The optimal RPO is not less than 15 seconds. The maximum RPO is 60 minutes.
Version 12
For Version 12, the minimum recommended network bandwidth is to have at least 100 Mbps.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

How much network bandwidth you require for your CDP implementation depends on the changed data blocks on your VMs and how often you run the CDP replica (RPO). More changes and lower RPO requires a higher throughput.

Best,
