Veeam HotAdd confusion (Vsphere Essentials)

Post by DappyDuck »

HI Guys,

Please can someone clear up this licensing issue for me?

When trying to HotAdd a disk using Veeam, a lot of people are saying that you MUST have vSphere Standard Licensing?

However, in VSphere standard licensing, the HotAdd feature only relates to HotAdd of CPU and Memory to a running VM - not SCSI HotAdd.

SO - my question is:

With a Veeam B+R Enterprise Plus License and a single ESXi Host running VSphere Essentials Plus - should we be able to use the Veeam HotAdd feature to backup the residing VM?

Please can someone clarify?

Thanks guys

Craig, those are different things.
VMware HotAdd is indeed the live addition of CPU and Memory.
Veeam uses Disk HotAdd, that is a technology available in every licensed version of VMware, and is used to connect a snapshotted disk of a VM to one of our virtual proxies, in order to be backup. You can also find this name as "virtual appliance" and this name indeed creates less confusion with the VMware HotAdd feature.

so hot add backup mode can be used with
lowest VMware Essential license and Veeam Essentials Standard license (and above).
