Veeam Hyper-v Instant VM Recovery to VMWare

Post by collinp »

Is there an option to perform an instant recovery from Hyper-v to VMWare using thin-provisioned disks? It restore the VM as thick-provisioned.

You can select a disk type when finalizing the instant recovery, on the Destination step of the Quick Migration wizard.

[MERGED] feature request : disk type choice for instant recovery (thin/thick)

Post by admsys »

Restoring a vm using instant recovery switches the disks that were in thick eager to thin.
It would be a good idea to include the possibility of choosing the type of disk, as in the case of an "entire vm" restore.

Hello,
It is not possible to select the type of disk during the quick migration wizard step of an instant recovery.
It would be possible, but post-process, to perform a quick migration, which can also be done with a storage vmotion.

Not sure I understand your point here. Quick Migration is not some optional or "post-process" activity. Rather, it is the required and mandatory step to finalize an instant VM recovery as it lands your current running VM data on the persistent production storage. Until you do this, your VM will run off of a "virtual" storage, which is not a long-term solution due to performance implications and added risks of data loss.

Hello,
I understand that it's not optional but we can also do a quick migration (same name) - migrating vm at any time. It's in this case post process and can also be done with a vmotion storage.
This is the answer I got from the support : Case #06363000
Disks are restored to thin by default. There is no option to change the format directly from the wizzard. You need to perform a disk migration to change the format.

Is there any way to publish/send the print screen of the steps to demonstrate what I'm saying ?

You can just post images on any image sharing web-site and share a link to them.

What I'm talking about is available directly in the Quick Migration wizard which is something you must perform to finalize instant VM recovery. This process will use Storage vMotion when it is available in your environment.

I try and I found it...
The option is available from veeam backup and replication but not from enterprise manager.
My request concerns the enterprise manager.

Hello,
Have you been able to validate the problem?
The request should be :
feature request : enterprise manager, disk type choice for instant recovery (thin/thick)
