veeam iscsi

Post by andreas2012 »

Hi,

We have a infrastructure that is connected to the vmware storage with iscsi.
Veeam B&R server is virtual, and also the proxies.
Backup transport mode is hotadd.

What I am wondering is if we connect the virtuell proxies to the vmware storage with iscsi would this go any faster or is it the "same" as with hotadd ?

Thanks for reply.

This is hard to say as there are too many variables.

In general Veeam Virtual Appliance mode (hotadd on steroids) use asyncronous read and write which should be faster than DirectSAN (iscsi) read (syncronous processing).
If you use our Storage integration on the other hand (Backup from Storage Snapshot), this is asyncronous again.

So HotAdd vs. Backup from Storage Snapshot should be nearly the same. Maybe one or the other is faster.
HotAdd (Veeam Virtual Appliance) vs. Direct SAN => Hotadd should be faster under indeal circumstances.

Sorry, depending on the size and change rate of the VMs there is another factor.
HotAdd processing need additional time to mount and unmount the snapshots to the Veeam Proxy. This could take some time which DirectSAN/BfSS do not have.
