Veeam replication + slow wanlink .. How to optimize?
The setup on both sides:
IBM v7000 FC SAN with 22*600GB 15k SAS disks + 2x 300gb SSD drives. 2x FC switches, 5x IBM x3650 M3 hosts with 144GB ram each, vmware 5.1
We are testing with replication between both sites:
I'm trying to replication our fileserver over to the other location, Our fileserver is 750GB+ in size
OS: W2k8 R2
Currently partitioned in (3 seperate vmware disks:
C: 40GB (OS)
E: 750 GB (data)
X: 30GB (SWAP+Indexing+Volume Shadow)
All swap data is going to X
Also indexing data is on that drive
and volume shadow copying for the E drive is stored on the X drive
A typical daily backup: X is excluded from the backup selection, still C: is 2~3GB in size, E is about 10GB in size each day. (dedupe rate is about 2x, so 20gb of data is actually changing according to veeam)
As our wan link is only 2/2mbits i can only backup 10gbyte/night (from 6 pm to 6am: 12 hours.... 2mbits/second * 60 seconds * 60 minutes * 12 hours = 86400 mbits/night /8 =10800 mbytes/night /1024 = 10,54 gbytes/night
So my backup window is to short.
Given the fact that upgrading the WAN is out of the question, are there more things to do to reduce the transfer?

Are you already using "WAN" storage optimization setting in Veeam?
Have you considered purchasing a WAN accelerator?

Hi Gostev,
Yes I've set the optimized for WAN traffic setting in the replication setup.
On both sides we have a riverbed which is our WAN accelerator.

Another question: How big are your c-drives in veeam?
page file on a different drive, indexing on a different drive, no shadow copies on C.
is about 2gb daily while nothing is changing on those servers

Is C: drive so important? I mean, if E: disk is the most critical element, try to run a job replicating only it and see how it takes. You can eventually replicate other disks during the weekend, if you can use part of the day on sunday maybe.

Re: Veeam replication + slow wanlink .. How to optimize?
what compressino settings are you using ? you might want to attempt the "extreme" setting if you have CPu for it.
Can you also attempt replication after shadow copies have been disabled ? I've seen local shadow copies cause bit level changes for the source volumes , meaning you get more changed blocks to replicate.

Since he is replicating over a very slow link, any CPU at all will be able to handle Extreme compression (given the data stream speed).chrisdearden wrote:the "extreme" setting if you have CPu for it.

I am having similar issues and after reading this I found I was using LAN Target and since my link is slow and as pointed here slow links vCPUs won't be much afected I am setting extreme compression then
thanks guys
