Veeam v12: "Instant Recover vs SureBackup" - V2V differences

Post by jotge »

Hello all,

In my testing of the new version 12 of VBR, I encountered the following problem.

I use the same Hyper-V VM for an instant recovery and in a SureBackup job. In both cases, this Hyper-V VM is restored to a vSphere environment (VMware Cluster) on the same ESXi host.

The difference is that the instant recovery works, after the V2V processing the VM boots and I can log in. With SureBackup, after the V2V processing (according to the log file), the VM enters a boot loop that always ends in a blue screen.

Has anyone observed a similar behavior and hints for me how I can work around the problem?

@Veeam: Is there a different V2V processing for these two operations?

Thanks a lot and have a nice weekend!

By chance is it a Active Directory Server?

If you have enabled guest processing in the backup Job? What is running on the VM?
What blue screen error code?

Did you open a support case? Please share support case number.

No, it is a "normal" application server without guest processing in the backup job.

The blue screen error code is: SYSTEM THREAD EXECPTION NOT HANDLED

I did not open a support case because I first noticed this problem during my v12 pre-tests in my test environment.

It is a driver or memory specific error. If you used different hosts for the testing maybe try one or the other on the same host to check if your hardware has some issues.
If it is still the same I would suggest to open a support case for it to le the support team analyze the root cause.

Anyway please update to latest v12 version: https://www.veeam.com/kb4420

The Veeam version used is already the latest one.

As I wrote at the beginning, I use the same ESXi host for both operations. Since an instant recovery works without problems and the only change is the execution of SureBackup, I rather think of a Veeam internal problem.

So I will open a case after all.

Thanks anyway for trying.
