Veeam with a Quantum DXI 4800 Deduplication appliance

Post by sdelacruz »

Good afternoon,

We recently purchased a Quantum DXi 4800 appliance (60TB) along with a Quantum Scalar Tape library for offsite copies.
I currently have a physical Veeam Server (Dell R730) with internal local storage - 30 TB where I have been using as my primary veeam repository.

I am almost running out of space.

My question is what would be the best deployment.

Option 1.
Use the new Quantum appliance to send copy jobs and lower my retention on local storage? Maybe go from 30 days to 7 days and clean up local disk space?

Option 2,
Use the Quantum as the primary target for backups? Move all my veeam files to the appliance and remap the backup jobs to it.

Quantum support is really not helping me with the veeam integration.

Thank you in advance,

Sam DLC

Hi Sam,

From my point of view, the option 1 is better as you don't need to perform extra manual actions to move backups and to map jobs. Furthermore, the option 1 ensures compliance with the 3-2-1 rule.

Thanks!

Would you happened to know if I do a Copy Job vs a Backup job, would the Quantum appliance give me the same deduplication.

Yes, deduplication doesn't depend on the job type provided the jobs have similar compression and storage optimization settings. It will totally depend on what is written to the storage - say, multiple fulls will dedupe well vs one full and a bunch of increments.
