Virtual appliance (hotadd)

Post by champ_ »

Hi,

Please clairfy one thing for me. If I want to use Virtual Appliance as transport mode, does both the Backup Server and the Backup Proxy have to be virtual?

Hi,

No, only backup proxy has to be a VM. Please see this article for more details.

Thank you.

Hi,

Ok, that's what I thought... Please explane why vmware tools has to be installed on the physical backup server.

"The backup server and backup proxy must have the latest version of VMware Tools installed"

That applies to a backup server that resides on a virtual machine.

Thank you.

Hi again!

Thanks for the info!
For a smaller enviroment (~50vms) is it enough with one hotadd proxy with the recommended config according to the SCL?
It''s 4 hosts.

There are some limitations:

1. A single SCSI controller can have a maximum of 15 disks attached. To run multiple concurrent jobs with more than 15 disks, you need to add more SCSI controllers to your Veeam Proxy server that is responsible for hot adding the disks. (please see the article)

2. Keep in mind that each task consumes proxy's RAM and CPU. Each separate virtual disk creates a single task. So, in order to avoid lack of resources your proxy should meet some requirements. Please see the article for details.

I'd recommend you to have several proxies and to split all alike VMs into groups and have a separate job for each group for better processing and deduplication ratio.

Thank you.
