virtual appliance proxy delayed write
hi.. i'm after a bit of general information, and basically some confirmation / or a point in the correct direction.
we have veeam configured to replicate a bunch of vsphere 5 hosts virtual images, to a spare host... all hosts have local storage.
there is a backup proxy installed on each host, running within windows xp virtual machines.
all seems to be working well, but on the target host proxy there are delayed write events in the event viewer.
Can't really seem to find in the documentation if the hot-add of the hard drives to the target proxy are only for reading data, or if they are written too aswell...
Suprised I couldn't find any info on google about the error related to veeam... There are a bunch of different warnings, but the only one that causes me concern is "event id 26".. It seems to occur once for each virtual machine part of the replication task over the time of the task... The message says: "Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file F:\. The data has been lost."
F: seems to be the drive letter that gets assigned to the hot-added hard disks...
Actually, I think I may have an idea that might work... Maybe if I disable Windows XP automatic drive letter assignment... I'll try that out and see how I go.
Veeam 6.0.0.181
Cheers

I am curious as to why you have drive automount enabled on your backup proxy, when proxy setup specifically disables it during the proxy components installation. Did you or someone may be enable it back manually?

Re: virtual appliance proxy delayed write
hi gostev... i didn't enable it, I thought due to the assignment of the drive letter that it must be enabled. {no settings were modified, standard xp install, and then proxy installed}
did a quick google, and unlike windows 2003 / 2008, in windows xp you cannot disable automount... ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... 35e7e22fad )
any ideas?

Re: virtual appliance proxy delayed write
Hi,
I never installed Veeam in a Windows XP machine, so I do not know if the disabling of automount made by Veeam also works in XP; I'm thinking the answer could be yes, since XP is a supported platform and there isn't any notes about installation on XP.
Found this page:

where seems that with XP sp3 you can deal with the MountManager service.

Re: virtual appliance proxy delayed write
hi dellock6... thanks for your reply.
I have Veeam installed on win7x64, but I've deployed some veeam proxies to xp virtual machines to aid in replication tasks.
Unfortunately the link you posted would result is disabling the mounting of all drives, including the system drive.. ( http://forums.citrix.com/thread.jspa?th ... &tstart=15 )
I think I'll install server 2008 virtual machines for the proxies
Still a bit amazed I couldn't find any veeam related info on the topic.

Probably because WinXP is not so common as a Veeam deployment platformparneye wrote:Still a bit amazed I couldn't find any veeam related info on the topic.
Anyway, if the Mount Manager also disable mounting the system disk, better stay away from it!!

Re: virtual appliance proxy delayed write
found a trick to get around it... wrote a simple batch file that calls subst on a local folder for every drive letter It maps A-Z: to c:\maptemp.. No free drive letters, mean no more automount
