VM Exclusion from storage snapshot not working
Hello,
we have a netapp and our veeam b&r server is triggering storage snapshots on it.
we use veeam proxies and we want to exclude them from the storage snapshots via vm exclusion.
But it seems like it is not working. The vm is in the excluded list but still appears in the storage snapshot.
Are we doing anything wrong? do we have to exclude the proxies from storage snapshots due to any limitations?
Thank you!

Re: VM Exclusion from storage snapshot not working
Hi Yannick
Snapshot-only backup jobs are create on volume level. All VMs on that volume will be included in the snapshot.
Exclusion in the job settings affects specific VM procession such as VM Snapshots or application aware processing before the storage snapshot is taken. It also affects updating the backup server configuration database. Included VMs will be updated immediately in the backups list. Excluded VMs will be shown in the backup list after the automatic or manual volume rescan.
Best,
Fabian

Proxies are not involved in Snapshot only backup jobs. You don't have to exclude them if you don't want to.do we have to exclude the proxies from storage snapshots due to any limitations?

Re: VM Exclusion from storage snapshot not working
Thanks for your answer,
the problem here is, the proxy is in the exlusion list but still gets snapshots and is listed in the netapp snapshot for that specific volume.
but if there is no limitations to storage snapshots we will not exclude them. we thought since the backup proxies should not be backed up in a veeam job we exclude them in the storage snapshot aswell.
best regards,
yannick

Re: VM Exclusion from storage snapshot not working
Hmm..... a SAN Snapshot will contains EVERYTHING whats on and for me this would be a very expected behaviour ( at least with block storage)
You should not see a VM Snapshot of course.

Joerg

Hello Joerg,
so you expect everything to be in that snapshot even if there are exclusions?
Yes i think so too but it looks like it. should i open a ticket?

Re: VM Exclusion from storage snapshot not working
Hi Yannick
No. A case is not required. As I already explained, it's expected behavior.
@Origin 2000
A VM snapshot is created with a snapshot-only jobs when you use "Enable VmWare Tools quiescence" with disabled "Application aware processing" in the job settings.
Best,
Fabian
