VMWare bought by Broadcom. Many are leaving VMWare
My sales rep told me Broadcom is getting rid of lower end licensing like the Essentials Kit that I use with VEEAM Community. Can I move to an Open Source solution and still use VEEAM? Do I need to find a new backup solution?

Yes, you can move to any hypervisor and continue backing up VMs with Veeam using agent-based backup, which is hypervisor-agnostic. Many of our customers are already doing this.

I am still using 11A Community. I need to upgrade the motherboard and components to get to 12. Can I run on other hypervisors on 11A?

I know everyone loves Veeam's instant recovery but remember Veeam BMR (bare metal restore) using the recovery media is also a gem. So for any environments like Proxmox etc you simply use the Veeam Agent for your backups and then also create the ISO for full vm restores and that provides a pretty darn good solution!

I used it at home on my HPE DL360e Gen8 server. I would need to reinstall the server with another hypervisor and setup VEEAM community again.

But if you change hypervisors backup sets and backup chains do not roll over with the new base hypervisor, right?
You'd have to make all new fulls of the VMs in question after migration?
and old Backups would only allow restore to the OG hypervisor they were backup from, no?

Yes, new chains would be required if its a new hypervisor based backup.
Depending on the hypervisor in question, you can possibly perform an Instant VM recovery to restore to the new hypervisor. This works between Hyper-V, VMware and Nutanix.
