VMware Cloud Director backups based on Metadata/tags
Hi all,
Are there any plans to enable backup and replication jobs for VMware Cloud Director (VCD) VMs to target VCD metadata rather than specific VMs or vApps?
VCD metadata is the equivalent of vCenter tags, and this is a must have to enable policy-based protections.
Today you need to select specific objects, be it a VM, vApp, OrgVDC or Org. This is very limited and not flexible enough for modern day protection standard, or what is possible in vSphere directly through vCenter.
Ideally, objects with a specific metadata tag would be able to be selects in the VBR job configuration like a vCenter filter. Eg. as a service provider, I might create a metadata property called "Backup" with a Yes/No value, and then apply it to all objects. Then create a job where if the metadata is set value for "Backup" is 'Yes', then it's included in the job. Or more like vSphere, just the property being present, or just pulling the values regardless of the property name if it's a string value.

Re: VMware Cloud Director backups based on Metadata/tags
Hi Ben
We have a few request about this and it's noted as a feature request in our system.
It's possible that we add it in a future version. But there is no ETA or target version we can share yet.
I'll add your vote and thoughts as to the request.
Best,
Fabian

I'd love to see this feature make its way into a future release. Surprising it hasn't been included yet to be completely honest.
