VMware tools version requirements

Post by bkain1 »

Is there documentation showing the required version of VMware tools, for using with 10a VBR/VONE? I'm only finding versions of vsphere, as a requirement, not VMware.

thanks

Hi Becki,

There is no such list because it depends on VMware requirements. Some guest OSs require certain versions of VMware tools to be present.

Thanks

(sorry, this is all a crash course for me in the virtual space), so VBR10A does not care what version or how old, the vmware tools are? I thought there was a compatibility issue? thanks

Hey Becki,

Latest version supported for the virtual machine + Vmware environment is always recommended, simply because it ensures you have the most recent bug fixes for vmware tools.

But is there a list at all? we're running into issues and our ESX team is pushing back for requirements. thanks

No, there is no such list. If you are facing any technical issue, the best way to address it is to contact our support team directly.

I'm very curious, what possible pushback could they have for clicking the "upgrade VMware tools" link? :D

I think your team is yanking your chain a bit ;)

There have been instances of "bad" VMware tools, but usually it's immediately apparent to the early adopters who test, and there are many articles. Maybe there's a major reason from your team I'm not aware of (and I'd love to know if there is!) but barring any significant reason, sounds like lazy VMware administrators.

i have no idea what the issue is, with updating vmware tools just like they have fully pushed back on vmware tagging.

Hi Becki,

You may confidently say that Veeam does not have requirements for VMware Tools versions as these requirements come directly from VMware. Moreover, the best practice is to always use the most recent VMware Tools version, as Harvey correctly mentioned above.

VMware tools version need to be supported by the ESXi host where the VM is running on. This is as well then the Veeam requirement.
