VMware vSAN and RegKey MaxSnapshotsPerDatastore

Hi folks,

has anybody experience with the veeam regkey "MaxSnapshotsPerDatastore" (official kb https://www.veeam.com/kb2182) to limit the number of concurrent snapshots per datastore specially in a vSAN environment. I had set this currently to "25" and haven't seen any issues or performance problems and consider to increase this value.

We had veeam 9.5 u4 and esxi 6.5 u2 with vSAN 6.6.1

Hi Stephan,

the Veeam settings for maximum Snapshots and Maximum parallel snapshot deletes are set very conservative to fit into all of our over 300.000 customer installations.
Of cause you can set it higher if you like and do not experience any negative issues. With todays storage systems or software defined storage systems snapshot workloads or snapshot delete workloads can be handeled way better/faster than with the old classic storages.

So unless you experience any issues you can keep it that way if it optimizes your backup window.

We are using vSAN only, and can also only run 4 vm snapshots at the same time. I tried to Change MaxSnapshotsPerDatastore in reg. on the Veeam server, but it is not there. Can I create the key, and if yes, how?

Hi Brian, yes, just create a REG_DWORD value with the specified name under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication.
