VVOL guest to other storage types

Post by harleyd » Jun 26, 2015 2:27 am

Hi

I would just like to confirm, with B&R 8 and ESXi 6.0, can we replicate a guest hosted on a VVOL to a remote host which only has VMFS stores?

Hi,
Correct, the scenario is supported, no problems should arise.
Just a small mention, you need VBRv8u2 to work with ESXi 6.0
Thanks!

And if you go that route, please come back and give us feedback, as VVOLs is a really young technology so we'd like to listen to users using them in conjuction with Veeam.

Thanks for your responses.

I didn't realise it was such a recent release... We won't be putting the system in production right away anyway, so I'm keen to at the very least get some serious testing in.

I read somewhere Direct SAN Access wasn't available for VVOLs, is this likely to change in future?

Yes, currently Direct SAN access it not available for any storage using vVols. As regards future releases, then there is a chance of having other methods available for backing up vVols.
