Where to Install Backup & Replication

Post by ausip »

Hi, this is a relatively silly question, but I can't seem of find the answer anywhere.

We have 2 Windows VM's we need to backup. Is it OK to install Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 on one of this Windows VM's even though we want to back it up also? or do we need a standalone VM to install and run Veeam Backup a Replication 9.5 from?

Thanks in advance...

Hi Paul and welcome to the community!

You should install Veeam B&R on a standalone VM. There are several scenarios of deployment you can review in the User Guide.
Please take a look on system requirements for the backup server. Thanks!

Thanks @DGrinev, that's the answer I needed.

I did review these deployment scenarios. Although I did not read them cover to cover, I didn't really see anywhere that it specifies that it needs to be a standalone VM

Paul,

Since you've small environment, you can use all-in-one server (all backup components on a single VM).
When the infrastructure will grow you are able to deploy components in an independent VMs to distribute the workload from the backup server. Thanks!

You can install Veeam B&R on one of these VMs as well, it will backup itself, however, this has some limitations (f.ex., hotadd cannot be used to backup this VM and in case it will backup other VMs via hotadd, CBT will not be available for this VM either).
