Which type of transport mode to use with HP P2000 SAS SAN?

Hi

I am planning next year a new installation of vmWare vSphere 5.1 (VMWare Essentials Plus) with HP P2000 SAS SAN and Veeam B&R v6.5.

This is the setup.

vSphere 5.1 host 1 with VM's
vSphere 5.1 host 2 with VM's
Both hosts in a cluster
Shared Storage = HP SAS SAN P2000
Veeam B&R v6.5
Both hosts are going be connected to HP P2000 SAS SAN.

Which transport mode should I use for this setup?

As per the size of your setup, I think you could be good with a single virtual machine holding all Veeam roles and using hotadd, but for a complete answer we need to know also what is the target storage to save your backups, just to be sure.

My backups are going saved on a old HP ML350 G4p server.
This server has 6 * 750 GB SATA HD in raid-5 configuration.
Which transport mode does I have to use for this?

For the HP P2000 SAS SAN => 8 * 600 GB in raid-5 with one spare disk.

Maybe I am thinking of a Windows Server 2012 with deduplication enabled on disks.
Which transport mode does I have to use for this setup?

Hi,
if you want to use Windows 2012 deduplication, Veeam central server needs to be installed on this server, so a good design could be made installing on the 2012 server both Veeam central server and the repository role. Create then a windows VM where you will install only the proxy role, and use then automatic transport mode, it will run in hotadd mode and then save backups to the G4p server.
Depending on the network design, you can connect the physical server to the proxy via VM network (the same where the proxy VM will run), or create a dedicated network via VLAN for backups.

I am attending to test Veeam B&R 6.5 for VmWare without any SAN.
I have only one old server (Supermicro) with vSphere 5.1 installed on it.
And on a windows 2012 datacenter trial is Veeam B&R v6.5 installed.
Which transport mode does I have to use for this setup?

As I already said before, if you use a physical Veeam server, you need to:
- connect it to the san (iscsi of fc) to use DirectSAN
- have a veeam proxy in a VM to use hotadd
If you simply go with a physical veeam server, it will use network mode. About your tests, it depends if you want to do a functional test (and any setup is good) or performance tests (and you need to configure the test as much as possible as the production design).
Your best choice anyway is to use Automatic Detection and let Veeam find out the best transport it can use.

The actual answer depends on whether your ML350 server is going to be connected into a SAS switch (or direct) onto the SAN?

If not, then the only transport method that makes sense is the virtual appliance with hot add. You will not be able to get a VM to "see" the SAN at a block level.

Hi

My ML350 G4p is located in a other building.
I have 6 buildings which are connected with 1Gb fiber from building to another building.

Here is geographic situation :

Building 1=> DL380 + DL360
Building 2 => ML350 G4p

Both building are connected over fiber (1 Gb).
For the moment i haven't a SAN but I am going to buy one SAN in 2013.
