Which VMWare License is needed for B & R?

Hi Community,

since VMware does not offer an Enterprise version in version 6 anymore, we are discussing which VMWare license model we need for a completly new infrastructure. We need both the backup and replication feature from Veeam B&R. We figured out that either the Standard license or the essentials plus bundle provide the necessery features except the "vAAI"[1] feature which is completly unknown to me. Can anyone confirm that the Standard o Essentials Plus version is enough for Veeam B&R?

Hi Tom,
Only Free ESXi is not supported because Veeam B&R leverages vSphere and vStorage APIs that are disabled by VMware in free ESXi.
Standard and Essentials should work with no issues.

Thanks for your quick reply. The 'vSphere Replication' feature is not needed? Because in the Essentials license model it is only in the 'Essentials Plus' version included.

You don`t need "vSphere Replication" feature to perform Veeam B&R replication.

You are welcome, Tom.
Veeam replication process is described here. VBR just requests vCenter Server or ESXi host to create a VM snapshot and to commit it in the end.

I am interested in Veeam Backup Essential solution for our small ESX environnement.

But I'd like to be sure if it requiere only a vSphere Essential licence or a vSphere Essential Plus licence ?

Because the second one is far off budget.

Any paid edition will be enough, including vSphere Essential.
