Wrong Vmware Proxy Selection ?

Post by ThierryF »

Hi,

Need your advises before opening case with support for what I think to be a bug ...

I have a 12.2.0 VBR Install I plan to upgrade soon to 12.2.1...
On my VBR Infra, is connected 1 Vcenter Infra 7.0u3, with its
dedicated ESXi hosts and Datastores.
As HotAdd Vmware Proxies, I have Px1 & Px2 as VMs on/for VCenter #1.

On yesterday, I configured in Veeam a second VC (8.0u3), with its
dedicated ESXi hosts and Datastores and created Px3 & Px4 as VMs on/for
VCenter #2.

No Shared Datastores between VCs.

From VBR Backup Infra, at both Px level, I have Datastore selection
defaultly set to automatically selection.

This night, I have some failed VM backups on VC#1. From log files, I detected it used
Px3&Px4 to backup VMs from VC1. Px3/Px4 not having acces to VC1's datastores, it
explained backup failures.

I manually workarounded my problem by updating datastore selection at Px level,
from automatic to manual selected list, restricting Px1/2 to VC1 Datastores and
Px3/4 to the ones from VC2

It looks like a bug for me : If Vmware Px has datastore automatic selection,
recommanded by the way, Veeam could, based on being backuped VM VC Location, detect and
verify if the assigned Px has datastore access to the VM vdisks, this preventing backup failure ....

Any advises ?

Thanks

This is how it works, you need to select the proxies that exist in that second environment.
Auto means all proxies can connect to everything.

Hello,

Thanks for reply. Something looks still illogic for me :

Looking at datastore "automatic detection" :
"Backup Proxy will automatically detect datastores it can backup VM files from"

For Manual selection "If the backup proxy cannot detect presence of datastores which it is supposed
to have DIRECT access" ....

Detection by Proxies on VC2 should detect they do not have access to VC1's Datastores
like for those from VC1 to not have accss to VC2's Datastores.

Rewording, knowing its Proxies and datastore acces by proxy map, VBR should assign a (hotadd) PX with
Direct access to VC's datastore to backup VM.
In my case, only Px1 and 2 for VC1's VMs and only Px3/4 for VC2's VMs ....

... On top of that, if you have in a VBR Backup job, VMs from differents VCenters, you cannot restrict Proxies unless
all VMs from the VBR Backup Job to be hosted by a single VC ...

VBR scheduler decisions are based on load iirc. You are looking for a scheduler who knows everything about the platforms to make calculated decisions.
This would create a complex system as Veeam would also needs to create something for all other supported platforms.

While I understand that this would be easier in your setup, its not how it currently works.
