Better Oracle RMAN restore performance

Post by kchtang »

Hello everyone,

We switched from EMC Networker + Data Domain to Veeam + HPE StoreOnce, before we could connect the Oracle DB client directly to the Data Domain by FC, then during restore the client will connect directly to Data Domain by FC for data transfer, so the performance is good.

Now with Veeam + HPE StoreOnce, we can only connect Oracle DB client <> Veeam <> HPE StoreOnce all through 1Gbps network, I want to connect the Oracle DB client to HPE StoreOnce by FC, but the gateway server role for HPE StoreOnce was only supported on Windows Server, and our Oracle DB is running Oracle Linux. I could connect Veeam <> HPE StoreOnce with FC, but the Oracle DB <> Veeam part is still 1Gbps, so the bottleneck is still there.

Is there a way to restore to client using FC? Or anything I could do to have a better Oracle restore performance? Thanks!

Hi Kevin,
I would contact the Veeam PreSales team or Solutions Architect team in your region to check on the setup and configuration. Maybe there is something they can advice by looking over the situation.

v13 will bring Linux Gateways for the dedup storages and you could place the gateway role on the system.
We usually try to avoid this as it means overhead on the database system that we try to reduce as much as we can.

I would buy 2x 40GbE (or 10 or 100 GbE) network cards and link them directly together between the DB system and the Veeam Gateway server and place a preferred network path for this network in our configuration. As you do not need a switch there, the configuration is very affordable.
