Hi,
We have several Oracle 19c databases and they are backuped via the rman plugin. We have now a challenge: our backup policy has been changed by our management: we did have a yearly full rman backup that where kept for 7 years. The full rman monthly backup were kept for 1 year and the daily for 30 days. But now we have we have to keep just 1 year backup; 3 month backups and the last 28 days of the daily. So we have to delete a lot of obsolete backups now and because we are coming from single instance 12c databases (with different rman repo's) it will be a LOT of work to delete the obsolete backups.
So my question: is possible to delete manually the backup files on the veeam storage. Will veeam reconsile the deleted files with veeam repository?
if so, this would make it very simple to remove the obsoleted files.
regards,
Ivan

Re: Oracle rman backup & removing old backups
Hi Ivan,
Nope, please don't delete any files from the file system: each file has a corresponding entity at the level of Veeam configuration database. If you delete a file manually, you create a discrepancy between Veeam database and the file system state and nobody knows which issue you may encounter because of that.
I recommend managing obsolete file deletion on the RMAN side. Also, I'm not sure that I understand how manual deletion of some files on the file system can reduce the amount of work. Could you please elaborate a little bit more?
Maybe you should consider one of these two workarounds:
1. To run 19c backups to a new repository and delete the old backup set manually when a new set reaches the required number of restore points
2. If you're using SOBR, maybe simply Move old backups to the Capacity Tier?
Thanks!

Re: Oracle rman backup & removing old backups
Pter,
By deleting manually I meant deleting it by using the Veeam Backup & Replication console. Home -> files -> select repository -> click on .vab file and the delete.
And not by going through the rman delete backup(set|piece) process.
regards,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,
Yes, I've got what you meant. The removing of individual .vab-s is not supported, you may consider one of the workarounds proposed above.
Thanks!
