Adding SMB Share Question

Post by Ultra_VM »

Hi can you add an smb share to Veeam that is not on Active Directory.
I have several PCs in my AD where I use veeam backup data and its fine.

I now have 3 PCs that are not on AD and if i use the local credentials \\PC1\backupadm and password I get this error

Failed to get SMB protocol dialect for Share \\PC1\C$. Access is denied.

Its a member of local admin and when I use an AD domain admin account to test in the same local admin group its fine.

What specific format of local credentials are you using? Because posted above "\\PC1\backupadm" is clearly an invalid one.

Hi Daniel,
Its a member of local admin and when I use an AD domain admin account to test in the same local admin group its fine.
Could you clarify this part please? How do those creds work if the machine is not in AD?

Thanks.

I think the issue is UAC for local accounts to remote access c$. Found this on the web.

The hidden administrative network share (also known as c$ admin share) is not accessible by default in Windows 10. The administrative share is automatically created but can’t be access by browsing to “\\computername\c$” from a machine on a workgroup or home network. In a domain environment the c$ share should already be available. In a workstation or home environment the administrative share can be enabled from the registry.

Will have to come up with another solution for machines not on the domain. Not keen on enabling in registry and cant use the agent ...

David,

For the entire file share backup (the case when you add entire share server to the job without selecting particular file shares), backup job will automatically skip all the hidden shares or admin shares. That's expected behavior, please test any other share from the mentioned server and let us know how it goes. Thanks!
