I have a question about how to configure NFS permissions on Synology to work correctly with Veeam.
- My question is about the squash setting—what should I choose?
- Could there be any issues if I leave it as "no mapping"?
- I chose NFS because it's supposedly faster, but should I use SMB instead?
I don't know your exact Synology model, but you should consider using it as an iSCSI target instead of SMB or NFS. Mounting iSCSI to a Windows machine (formatted as ReFS) or a Linux repository (formatted as XFS) will allow you to utilize Fast Clone, which enables faster and more space-efficient synthetic full backups.
The space savings provided by Fast Clone will be a significant advantage over SMB/NFS repositories.
in short:
- Create LUN on NAS
- Expose LUN via iSCSI
- Mount LUN via iSCSI initiator on Windows (is a feature that needs to be installed).
- Format LUN with ReFS
- Create Veeam repository with this LUN
Please note this is not our product so we're not in position to make recommendations here, especially around security settings. You should ask Synology-related questions on the corresponding vendor's forum.
From Veeam perspective, the only recommendations we can give are:
1/ NOT to use such low-end consumer-grade NAS devices as a backup target at all, because they've been responsible for 9 out of 10 data loss in our Support for the entire history of Veeam. The risk of going this route is real and very significant.
2/ NOT to use NFS or SMB backup targets for performance, disk space usage and (in non-HA configuration) reliability concerns.
Veeam recommends using general purpose servers with proper enterprise-grade RAID controllers and ReFS or XFS file system for your backup repositories.
Gostev is not wrong on this.
But if you have to / really want to use this NAS, the only real viable route would be LUN / iSCSI.
NFS and SMB would create such a big overhead and other issues like permission and bandwidth.
I forgot to mention an important thing, which is that the NAS is not on the local network, but in another location. Communication is done through an IPSEC tunnel, and the tunnel latency is 25ms. I want to use it as a secondary backup. Would LUN/iSCSI still be the option?
hmm, no i wouldnt do LUN over 25ms latency, NFS or SMB would be your route.
But is a Veeam CloudConnect serviceprovider not a better solution for you here?
