ovirt-question

Post by german83 »

Hi All,

I have a question regarding this we have a few host with Rocky Linux with Ovirt those servers are a dev environment, I wanted to know if it's possible to use Veeam agentless, I see now is RHEL supported but I don't know if it can work with Alma Linux or Rocky Linux.

Hello,
I heard from customers that at least CentOS is working. So it's worth a try.

Please give feedback on the result of your tests :-)

Best regards,
Hannes

Hello,
I have transitioned to Rocky all my CentOS, and it worked like a charm.

But of course, wait for final official supported systems :)

Long life to Rocky

Small follow-up question while we're talking about RHEL-flavors: what about Oracle Linux and OLVM? Haven't had the chance yet to install & test it myself, but a statement that it should work and perhaps even on a best-effort support basis would be awesome for an upcoming backup roadmap ;)

Hello,
for the foreseeable future, only Red Hat / RHEV will be officially supported. Red Hat is currently updating their APIs regularly. We don't know how long it takes for before the improvements end up in the other "compatible" distributions.

Thank you very much for the update Hannes. Only thing I can say is that Oracle is pushing hard with OLVM, licensing-wise, so we're seeing those workloads migrating away from vSphere to OLVM. OLVM + RMAN plug-in would be a great fit for those Oracle workloads. Not critical sure, but a good argument when comparing backup products.

Seems that they're lagging behind with oVirt 4.3.10 though and might be focusing on stability rather than going for more recent versions of oVirt.

yeah, Oracle and their licensing... I also have customers that have a Hyper-V cluster because of that...

For Oracle, I would also go with RMAN + agent for the files. To me it makes little sense to back up the whole VM if the databases are backed up with RMAN.

[MERGED] KVM support question

Post by mabroo »

Has Veeam looked at expanding out to other forms of KVM (i.e. Oracle Linux KVM for example, witch is based on ovirt similar to RH KVM.)

Hello,
and welcome to the forums. I merged your question into an existing thread with the same question.

Please see above. Stable change block tracking is key. For non-productive environments you can use it in compatible distributions without support. For other scenarios, there are Veeam agents available.

[MERGED] Backing up OLVM Virtual Machines - oVirt compatible?

Post by ARycroft »

Hi,

We have an OLVM virtual environment that is based on oVirt and KVM. How best can one backup these VMs using Veeam to back up this virtual environment?

Hello,
please see above... OLVM probably works, but would be unsupported for Veeam Backup for RHEV.

"best" for most people means that it must be "supported". So agents would be the way to go in that case.

[MERGED]Is Veeam Backup for RHV Compatible with OLVM?

Post by a.luwaylah » 1 person likes this post

Hello dears,

I have a question that may be a little bit confused one. Is Veeam Backup for RHV compatible with Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager? While both are "ovirt" I think it could be possible to use Veeam for OLVM instead of RHV.

If there is anyone faced that inquiry before and got an answer for that, kindly share it with me.

Hello Abdulmuhaymin

I moved your post to this existing topic.
It may work, but it will not be supported by us.

Thanks

+1 for OLVM support. We are running OLVM because of Oracle licensing, and being able to backup entire VMs like we do with MSSQL servers on vSphere would be awesome!

Please consider expanding support for this.

if you use application aware processing, then that's something unique to VMware & Hyper-V for foreseeable future. SQL or Oracle log shipping combined with image-based backup is not available in Veeam Backup for Nutanix or Red Hat virtualization. So that would be another step to go.

As to current status of OLVM - it is currently not up to the latest ovirt release (with fixes 4.5.1 or later at this point). Oracle is aware of this. At this point there is nothing for Veeam to consider in regards to OLVM.

[MERGED] Feature request: Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager (OLVM)

Post by rteglgaa »

Hi,

Oracle uses KVM and rebrands it as OLVM. Most Oracle database customers are forced onto this hypervisor over vSphere because of Oracle licensing rules.

It would be awesome if Veeam would incorporate official support for OLVM, so that we can backup our databases easily. As it's basically a rebranded KVM I don't think it would require much of Veeam.

Good day,

I'm curious to know if you have tried using Veeam agentless on Rocky Linux in your environment and if you were able to achieve the desired result.

Honest question, how many requests from a large population of Oracle users who are forced to abide by strict licensing restrictions before you consider changing your stance? Repeating the same tired refrain of agent-based solutions isn't great at scale. Additionally, sticking to the mantra of we only support RHV doesn't seem as strong now that RedHat has formally announced the end of active development of oVirt. I have pushed on Oracle, and they have assured me they have no plans of changing course. Oracle KVM is what they use on some of their internal enterprise solutions. Yes, they are about 2 years behind RedHat in releases, but it is still essentially the same thing under the hood. Everything was working until we moved to the latest version, so we have downgraded for now. It would be nice to have it officially supported.

That is very encouraging to see that Oracle KVM will be formally supported, now that Oracle has picked up the oVirt baton. Anxiously awaiting the formal announcement.

Support for host-level backup of Oracle Linux KVM hypervisor is now generally available.

Download the plug-in now > Veeam Backup for Oracle Linux KVM
Datasheet from Oracle > Oracle Linux KVM and Virtualization Manager
