No ovirt plug-in installation possible for VBR 12.1.1.56

Post by real_tarantoga »

Hello,
I'm new to the theme oVirt / KVM backups.
As I understand the documentation I have to install the ovirt kvm plug-in available for download (version 12.4.1.45), but I cannot: when I try to install the plug-in I'm getting the error, that VBR 12.1. is a system requirement ... ?!
On both: the backup server and the (remote) console server.
The backup server is "cleansed" following the best practice website - so all veeam explorers and the console itself are uninstalled.

I can add the Oracle VM manager connect as "Red Hat virtualization manager" but there is no menu point "oracle linux kvm" as mentioned here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbrhv ... tml?ver=41
And the plug-in isn't installable. Is this a known issue and is it easy to fix it?

Thank You,
Stefan

Hello, no this is not a known issue. Could you please try installing the plug-in on an out-of-the-box VBR installation, as this is how we test. Perhaps some of your "cleansing" throws off some setup checks, making it unable to detect the presence of VBR 12.1. Please note that R&D doesn't validate any custom VBR configurations for installation and upgrade scenarios, so this is not something we can officially support at this time. Thank you!

hello gostev,
I can confirm for now, that the hardening conflicts with the ovirt kvm plug-in.

I will report the final solution later. ;)

I did a "repair" of the vbr installation to fix the missing dependencies - which installed most of the components, but not correctly the shell itself.
So I intalled the shell_x64.msi and finally the oVirt KVM plug-in.

All is good now! :)

I will not "re-harden" the setup unless the best practice site https://bp.veeam.com/vbr is updated to what or what not can be safely removed from the central backup server to reduce the attack surface.
I really appreciate all the work, hints, tools ... veeam is offering to its customers. Including the BP site - I hope that will be actualized in the near future.

Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for sharing your findings, much appreciated!

P.S. I have let the authors know about the need to update the guide.

Cheers
