Backup copy job (LAN) slow - why?
Hi
I set up a backup copy job on my Veeam config. All targets are iSCSI and connected via 10G and network speed is good.
The primary backup goes to a QNAP ZFS NAS and was finished in 28hrs - for a 35TB VM (reverse incremental) I would says thats "ok".
Now the backup copy for job goes to a QNAP NAS (non ZFS) and the copy speed is only 70mb/s - that is about 60+% slower than the primary backup speed.
I know that both NAS can read and write at 700-1000mb/s consistent. So I am asking myself why the copy is so slow? - Since it is a reverse incremental Veeam can simply copy the whole backup file, that should be a consistent 500mb/s as a "more or less" sequential read and write.
Or is a copy backup job more like a "random read"? - that would probably explain it since the ZFS NAS where the data is now being read from is running HDDs and their RR performance sucks....
With the current speed it would be etter to run the backup job as an "active full", that would be finished in less than 30hrs
thx

QNAP is bloody crap.
And if it is really necessary to use them, please use iscsi with refs/xfs.
Anf do not use rev inc. its a dead tech.

What is "rev inc"?
I rarely had issues with Qnaps, so I am not sure why u comment like that. Synology isn't any better and there aren't many more manufactures.

Excuse me please to be not precise. EVERY consumer NAS is not suitable for a serious backup target. Especially for the primary. Please use decent x86 servers with enterprise grade hardware RAID controller and state of the art file systems like ReFS and XFS or object storage.
rev inc = reverse incremental
rev inc = reverse incremental

Sorry but that is incorrect - Linux SW RAID is as good if not better than any HW RAID, the latter is on a steep decline.
ZFS on Linux is stable and really solid and good.
Qnap builds shitty boxes, thats for sure but the also build SMB grade and high end storage solutionwhich use Intel or AMD x86 - not everyone needs and can afford NetAPP and the like.
So running a QNAP ZFS based system with iSCSI is a solid solution, it is not craps as lond as the HDDs are server grade, which they are in my case.

id recommend to open a Veeam support case. Veeam support is able to figure out the bottleneck.
