Backup logs options with AlwaysOn AG ?
Hi,
I did a setup for SQL Server with AlwaysOn Availability group and the backup is successed through Veeam.
I can see from SQL is that Veeam is taking backup from Active node and discard the secondary node.
How this is work ?
I read
http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/e ... tings.html
but still not clear
My question what about backup log options in case of AlwaysON?
I want manage logs through Veeam as well.
1) Truncate logs (recommended)
2) Do not truncate logs (Sore not suitable)
3) Backup logs (every 15 minutes)
I cannot see the transaction log backup from SQL server ? Did I miss something here??
How can choose the primary or secondary from Veeam setting.
BTW we are using version 8
Thank you all in advance.

Re: Backup logs options with AlwaysOn AG ?
Thanks foggy for fast response.
I read them before I do the post.sorry it is not clear for me.
I need direct answer without explanation.
From your reply
"AG nodes do not necessarily need to be backed up in a single job. What is much more important, is that transaction logs backup should be performed only in one job - if some of the nodes are backed up by a different job, this job should have the 'Do not truncate' setting selected for these VMs"
I put it in a single job for both nodes? Primary success while Secondary failed.
Both VMs configured backup logs every 15 minutes? is it Ok. I cannot see it from database.
Is Veeam AlwaysOn Aware? means only take the backup primary

Re: Backup logs options with AlwaysOn AG ?
It'd be appreciated, if you provide a resolution for the convenience of future readers.
As far as I remember, you should enable log truncation option for desired node and leave "do not truncate" for the other one, because as UG states "Logs are backed up for the only one AlwaysOn Availability Group node selected". Is that what support team responded?
Thanks.

Re: Backup logs options with AlwaysOn AG ?
Thanks.
We are still discussing with them.
The answer is
========================================
Only one node get backup-ed up in terms of transnational log. Full backup is taking to both nodes.
Tested with Veeam and verified.

The answer is
"Logs are backed up for the only one AlwaysOn Availability Group node selected". To become a subject for log backup, the node must meet the following criteria:
▪Required Veeam Backup & Replication components can be installed on that node (in particular, the VM must be running).
▪If there are any logs remaining in the temporary folder on that node of AlwaysOn Availability Group, this means they were not backed up to the destination repository during the previous log backup session, so this AlwaysOn Availability Group node must be processed first.
▪Databases in the AlwaysOn Availability Group(s) for that node were successfully backed up (for the last two processing intervals).
▪Node availability over the network [is preferred, otherwise via VIX].
▪The VM is in the list of preferred nodes (for backup) retrieved from the Microsoft SQL Server. If there are no preferred nodes, then any node can be chosen.

Only one node get backup-ed up in terms of transnational log. Full backup is taking to both nodes.
