File share ports need to be open in guest VM?

Post by birdwaffle »

I'm confused as to how the Hyper-V VM backup works.

The Veeam agent is installed on the Hyper-V standalone host but still VM backups didn't work for a Windows guest VM until I opened the print and file share ports in the guest VM firewall. (As per documentation: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... 95u4#guest)

Before that, I was getting this error:
Failed to create VM recovery checkpoint (mode: Veeam application-aware processing) Details: Unable to perform application-aware processing because connection to the guest could not be established
I'm surprised it needs open ports inside the VM.

What if the guest didn't have a network interface? What if the network interface of the guest is on the public internet and I cannot open the file share ports?

Hi,
What if the guest didn't have a network interface?
In this case the application won't be able to communicate with other machines, and you won't be able to perform application processing.
What if the network interface of the guest is on the public internet and I cannot open the file share ports?
Then VBR won't be able to perform application processing.

In either case you can try to work around it with quiescence.

Thanks!
