GFS Files

Post by SWICT »

Hi, I have set our GFS retention policy as 1 yearly, 12 monthly and 4 weekly.
We want to move the files created off to tape so I have created a directory to move the GFS files into which will then be backed up to tape by Backup Exec and then deleted from the disk.
VEEAM has subsequently created new files in the backup copy directory with the same names as the files I moved but they are only 30MB not 3TB as the originals.
I am quite happy to keep these files as they are small but what purpose do they serve ?

Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,
What are extensions of those files? Are they .vib(s) or .vbm(s)?
Out of curiosity, why not to use Veeam B&R for to-tape backup as well?
Thanks!

They are VBK files.

The tape libraries are currently connected to the Backup Exec servers. In the long term we will connect a tape drive to the VEEAM server too but haven't got that at the moment.

Probably the files are empty and were recreated by VBR to keep track of restore points.
Have you deleted GFS files from disk manually or using VBR UI?
You could just uncheck GFS retention in the job settings and during the next run of the job all GFS points will be deleted.

By the way, could you provide logs for us to review? You can do it through Veeam Technical support. Thanks.
