Guest File System Indexing

Post by Perry »

I tried restoring a file from a backed up guest VM that is 200Gig large. It takes a long time because it has to reconstitute the entire VM in a temp folder before it can extract that one file I need. Does enabling Guest File System Indexing provide for faster recovery of a single file from VM?

Hi Perry,

The entire VM is never restored during FLR process. Can you please tell us a bit more about your infrastructure? Where is your backup repository located? Is is a dedupe device or regular storage?

Thanks!

I have two hyper-v host servers with another separate server running Veeam backup. The VMs are backed up to a NAS not a dedupe device.

Ok, thanks for clarification! FLR restore performance depends on the repository performance (in your case it is a NAS device). Please take a look at this existing topic with a similar question > Very slow file level restore and problem with permissions
