Off-Host vs StandAlone Hyper-V OS Versions

Post by rlspeeks »

I just want to be clear, the documentation states this:
"Versions of a Microsoft Hyper-V host and off-host backup proxy must coincide. For example, if you use a Microsoft Windows Server 2012 machine with the Hyper-V role enabled as a Microsoft Hyper-V host, you must deploy the off-host backup proxy on a Microsoft Windows Server 2012 machine with the Hyper-V role enabled."

I understand the above, what I would like to be sure of is, if I'm just adding a Standalone Hyper-V host that is a different version of my Off-Host backup proxy, that is ok b/c I'm not using the Off-host backup proxy to do the processing. Correct?
My OHBP is Windows Server 2016
The Standalone server I want to add is Windows Server 2012 R2.
Thank you.

Hi Rebecca and welcome to the community!

That's correct.

If I get it right, you would like to protect two independent Hyper-V hosts.
The major reason for an off-host proxy is to reduce the workload from the source host, without it all the processing will be done on each host. Thanks!

@DGrinev
Thank you. I think you answered my question. I just want to make sure I can protect/backup a StandAlone Hyper-V host that is Windows Server 2012 R2 when my Backup & Replication Server is Windows Server 2016. Because I'm using On-Host processing to backup those VMs.
Thank you.
