Server 2012 Dedupo

Post by frankive »

I have my repository hosted on a Windows Server 2012 with deduplication enabled.
The results is extreme. It actually seems I get more and more space available. When I go to server manager it says 60% deduplication and for now 6 TB saved.
I think this is amazing saving, what do you guys think?
Especially for backup copy job with GFS retention this really benefits.
When I designed my repository I was calculating a lot of space but with these results I have a ton of space left.

Is there any downside with this deduplication? What would happen if i copied these veeam files which is dedplicated in 2012 to a regular drive with no deduplication?

The date will be rehydrated to its original ("pre-dudupe") size, filling the corresponding drive. More information about using Windows 2012 deduplication feature for backup repository can be found in this thread; so, please, take a look.

Thanks.
