Where to install Veeam for Hyper V

Post by ditro »

Hello together,

I've got a design question.

A customer has got the following szenario
2 Hyper-V Hosts in a cluster
1 shared Storage with VMs in it

1 Backup Exec installed on one Hyper-V Host in order to backup the Veeam Files to tape.

But where to install Veeam?
Should I install Veeam one one of the Hyper V Hosts?
Should I install Veeam in a VM?
Should I install Veeam on both Hyper V Hosts?

Thank you for answering ;)

Hello!

Veeam B&R can be installed on any Windows-based computer, either physical or virtual. Please review the system requirements available in the release notes document (comes with your download). The whole solution architecture is also covered in the product user guide in detail.

Thanks!

Hi,

I tried to read Veeam documentation and search from Google but still I'm bit of unsure what is the best way to go with Hyper-V 2012 and Veeam B&R 6.5. Is there anything that I should be aware of when installing Veeam directly to Hyper-V 2012 host machine that has virtual machines running and needs to be backed up?

Basically you have two option to proceed with:

1. Install Veeam B&R on any machine and use on-host backup proxy to retrieve VM data. You can install Veeam B&R directly on the Hyper-V host for that.
2. If you're using SAN storage and have hardware VSS provider, then you can use off-host backup proxy to backup Hyper-V VMs.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
