Why Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer fails with en event ID10103

Post by tobia »

Hi everybody,
I would like to know what can causes a Windows event ID10103 during the snapshot, this is the error message:

Code: Select all

Failed to revert to VSS snapshot on the virtual hard disk '\\?\Volume{29e16157-002f-4cb4-af58-c95acbd54be9}\' of the virtual machine 'srvshare1'.
I got this error only in a particular VM, but I have to say that this VM has the biggest harddisk (650GB) of my cluster.
I tryed to reboot its node and also this VM, sometimes after that reboot the snapshot works again for one time, but after that it fails again.

Hi,

Please specify what is your host OS and guest OS. Are there any other error messages in windows log? Also, what's the output of 'vssadmin list writers'?

Thank you.

Win server 2012 in both host and guest.
The command ''vssadmin list writers' lists an error only in the writer: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
State is Failure and Laste error is Recoverable Errore.

Thanks

Is it 2012R2? If so, then do you have a SCSI controller attached to problematic VM?

It is a Win2012 simple, not R2.
The VM doesn't have any scsi connected, its hdd (vhdx) are store in a shared SAS storage.

Then a deep-dive into logs might be required - please open a case with support and post case ID in this thread.

Thank you.

Disabling the "Application-Aware Image Processing" for this particular VM, the backup job works...
I will consider to open a case. Thanks

How much of free space do you have on the storage that hosts your 650Gb disk?

What kind of application do you run on that server? How intense is the datachange rate?
