Nasty Retention Bug with AHV Backups
I was trying to clear some space for a client in the VBR console. We had taken a lot of one off backups from an AHV cluster a few weeks back. I deleted the AHV job out of the VBR console because it was no longer needed. I also removed the AHV proxy and AHV cluster from inventory. After this I lowered retention for a windows file cluster job. I then right clicked on Backups and "Applied retention now". What I expected was the file cluster job to get cleaned up. What happen was that in addition to the file cluster backups getting pruned, VBR deleted our only backups on disk for a bunch of AHV servers. Let me know what all you need from me. I can export logs and hand over our config backup as well if it helps.

Perhaps I'm not reading this correctly but I'm unclear why you removed the proxy appliance and AHV cluster as part of the process. It would have been sufficient to change retention and then "apply retention" for the jobs you wanted to keep.

The AHV cluster was decommissioned. We migrated from AHV to VMware. You can remove other types of proxies and jobs and not lose backups when you run retention. It's normal for retention to run it's course and leave the final restore point, not to delete all restore points.

Ah got it. I tried the same steps in my lab and the backups continued to show in the orphaned backups view. Definitely not the expected behavior that yours would have been deleted.

Re: Nasty Retention Bug with AHV Backups
Just curious.... you mentioned "We had taken a lot of one off backups from an AHV cluster a few weeks back. "
Was the retention for the backups set to 'days' and line up to the timeframe when you ran the operation? Did it line up with when you ran the manual retention? If retention ran like this and the time was up (>= N days) then I would expect something like this.
For example,
AHV job created 2 weeks ago with 14 day retention - run once
Delete the job > Remove the proxy > Remove the Cluster (removing job (which removes the job) is enough)
14+ days later, 'apply retention now'...
