Direct backup to AWS Glacier

Post by peeky1323 »

Hi,

Is direct backup to Glacier supported? We have the repo setup and the helper appliance but when we create a backup job we cannot select this as a target. We are using Azure as a direct target without issues.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt

No, AWS Glacier can only be used as an Archive Tier.
For the archive tier you still need a SOBR and backups must first be written to AWS S3, before they can be offloaded to AWS Glacier.

Please be aware of the cost impact if you want to copy or move backup data from Azure to AWS. You have to pay for egress traffic and API calls. I suggest consider using Azure Archive Storage instead. You can use a SOBR with the direct to Azure repository as a performance tier and offload from there the backups to the Archive Tier.

Thanks, we do not want to move from Azure to Glacier, we wanted to backup direct to Glacier without SOBR. Can we backup direct to S3 and then have S3 move it to Glacier? We wanted a place to keep a large amount of backups for long term never to be accessed storage. We do not have the capacity for another copy of the data locally in an SOBR. Are there any options for this?

Yes, this can be done with V12.
V12 can move GFS backups from AWS S3 directly to AWS S3 Glacier. Our Capacity Tier is not required in this scenario.

1x SOBR:
- Performance Tier: AWS S3 buckets
- Archive Tier: AWS S3 Glacier bucket

thank you. What about backing up to Azure Archive? Do you have to use Azure Lifecycle for this or is it possible to create to backup direct to the archive tier?

Using Lifecycle policies are not supported. It will lead to backup and restore issues. Moving backups from Azure Blob to Azure Archive must be solely managed by Veeam.

Direct Backup to Azure Archive Storage is also not supported.
You need to leverage a SOBR. Similar to AWS S3 and AWS S3 Glacier.

1x SOBR:
- Performance Tier: Azure Blob
- Archive Tier: Azure Archive Storage
