move backup from Performance Tier to Archive Tier without Capacity Tier

Post by ebondi »

Hi, from onlibne documentation https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120 I read "In case you transfer data from the performance tier to the archive tier"

From this phrase I understand that it is possible to have just Archive Tier object storage repository avoiding have also a Capacity Tier repo.

But configuring SOBR, at "Capacity Tier" step, I see that unchecking the "Extend ..." box

then the "Archive Tier" disappears!

So, how is it possible move backups from Performance Tier directly to Archive Tier without the need to have an intermediate Capacity Tier object storage?

Thanks
Regards

Hello Ebondi

What version of Veeam are you using?
Performance Tier to Archive Tier is possible if you have one of the following configuration:

Option 1 with Azure:
- Performance tier: Azure Blob Storage
- Archive Tier: Azure Archive Storage

Option 2 with Amazon:
- Performance tier: Amazon S3 Object Storage
- Archive Tier: Amazon S3 Glacier Storage

May I ask what object storage appliance/service you plan to use for the performance tier and as the archive tier.
From your screenshot it seems you may use a on-premise Linux object storage appliance.

Best,

Hi, I recently upgraded to latest version Veeam 12.1

I already have Performance Tier on repositories on servers on premise, Capacity Tier on AWS S3 and Archive Tier on S3 Deep Archive

I need Performance Tier on premise for speed reasons.

So I understand that I cannot avoid Capacity Tier on AWS S3, right?

Correct. Going directly to Archive Tier is not possible because it requires a very different backup format to be economically viable. This transformation is done in-cloud using helper appliances, as the oldest oldest data is being moved from Capacity Tier to Archive Tier.

The core issue is under the restrictions statements, that it should be the same vendor on the from/to archive tier.

This restriction effectively says you cannot go on premise to archive tier in the cloud without going thru capacity tier in the same cloud as archive tier.

I do hope Veeam will lift this restriction in the future. I'm hoping it was a testing/time to market issue vs. technical.

I think this is a great limitation. I hope in the next versions it will possible to backup directly toward the Archive layer in cloud
