AWS S3 questions
Hi,
Looking to back a few business critical VMs to AWS S3 storage. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if I install an AWS storage gateway on prem and present it to Veeam B&R server, I would only be able to back up to VTL which does not support entire VMs backup and is meant for files only.
If I add AWS storage to Veeam server as a disk drive I can then add it to Veeam as an external repository and backup the entire VM to it. Not sure if AWS storage gateway is needed.
I should also mention that we are on the standard edition which does not allow Object Storage to be added as a repository
Thanks

Re: AWS S3 questions
Hello,
correct, for standard edition you can only run "file to tape" jobs to the VTL. Which in the end means you copy a complete backup job file with probably more than one VM to the VTL (as you also don't have per-VM backup chains).
From my point of view, file-to-tape can solve your requirement if you have enough bandwidth.
Best regards,
Hannes

that's a different use-case that does not help here (currently to integrate with "Veeam Availability for AWS" / "N2WS Cloud Protection Manager")If I add AWS storage to Veeam server as a disk drive I can then add it to Veeam as an external repository
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: AWS S3 questions
Thanks for confirming.
Luke Miller has an old post https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f6NWEs4EeE where he shows a full VM backup to AWS from an existing local backup.
1. Is Enterprise License required for what's shown?
2. Is the procedure still valid? The post is 5 years old
Thanks

Re: AWS S3 questions
Hello,
welcome
1. I did not watch the whole video, but in general EM is not needed. You could install EM even in standard edition by the way
2. I see no reason why it should not work
Best regards,
Hannes

sorry, yes, EM = Enterprise Manager. It's not required.

Re: AWS S3 questions
Going back to your first post in this thread, if I upgrade to enterprise license would I be able to backup the entire VM to VTL or it's done differently using scale out repository which does not require an AWS storage gateway?

Hello,
Best regards,

correct. with Enterprise license you would probably not use the VTL. Data would be offloaded to S3 directly and it would also offer you all options of restore instead of "full VM only" when using tape / VTLit's done differently using scale out repository which does not require an AWS storage gateway?
Best regards,
Hannes
